Nicola York - 24-Jan-2008

Work and Pensions Secretary Peter Hain has quit the Cabinet after the Electoral Commission referred the issue of his deputy leader campaign donations to the Metropolitan Police.
Hain, who was also Wales Secretary, said in a statement: "In view of the Electoral Commission decision today, I will be resigning to clear my name and I will be making a statement shortly."

He quit shortly after the Electoral Commission said it had decided to refer the late declaration of £103,000 of donations to the police.

Hain blamed the late payments on poor administration by his campaign team and said it was not deliberate.
